Both MS Sharepoint and IBM Workplace are designed facilitate workgroup sharing of documents. Microsoft assumes users will be using the MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PPT, etc).

Microsoft strenghts are as follows:
1. Leverages and integrates well with MS Office
2. Good out of box templates for website and project teams.
3. Can create portal links to News and Stocks
4. Can use BizTalk to integrate with other databases

Sharepoint weaknesses are as follows:
1. Must run on MS Windows 2003 server
2. Requires a number of Windows Server products to run effectively (could be costly if not already own).
3. Limited personalization capabilities
4. Scalability issues
5. Requires each user have MS Office on desktop
6. No true document management functionality.

IBM workplace is designed for small to large and has the following strengths:
1. Integrates with Windows and does not require a separate Office license for all users.
2. Integrates with Instant Messageing for presence awareness.
3. Easy to deploy
4. Numerous templates for team set up.
5. Built on a portal infrastructure
6. Lower total cost of ownership
7. True document management
8. Runs on Linux, windows, Sun, etc servers
9. Includes web conferencing

It all depends on what you want to accomplish and where you see your company growing.
