New Computer

I'm in the market for a new windows-based computer. I've heard a lot of advice that I should buy parts online and build the computer myself. Other people say that I should simply buy a brand-name PC. I've had friends that have had a lot of difficulty with Dells, and I was hoping to stay away from them.
Please advise.
